Assembly member Fiona Ma (D-San Francisco) has reintroduced a bill (AB 1000) that would require employers to provide paid sick leave to workers, the Orange County Register's "Jan Norman on Small Business" reports.
Under the bill:
- Employees who work at least seven days a year would be eligible for paid sick leave;
- Workers would accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked;
- Employees could use paid sick leave to recover from an illness or care for a family member; and
- Businesses could not take action against workers who request paid sick leave.
The Assembly approved a similar bill last year.
The bill has been referred to the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee and Assembly Judiciary Committee (Norman, "Jan Norman on Small Business," Orange County Register, 4/13).
