Committee Approves Bill Requiring Medical Exams Before Cosmetic Surgery

On Monday, the Senate Business and Professions Committee approved a bill (AB 252) by Assembly member Wilmer Amina Carter (D-Rialto) that would require patients to pass a physical examination before undergoing elective cosmetic surgery, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reports.

Last month, the Assembly passed the bill with bipartisan support.

Although the California Medical Board supports the legislation, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's (R) Department of Consumer Affairs contends that the bill is unnecessary because the state already has similar regulations.

Last year, Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill by Carter, citing budgetary challenges (Miller, Riverside Press-Enterprise, 6/22).
