Increase in Health IT Investment Overdue, PBGH Chief Says

Peter Lee, CEO of the Pacific Business Group on Health, said that the "entire health care industry has underinvested in IT for the last 15 years," the San Francisco Business Times reports.

Lee said, "There's no question that we need to bring health care into the 21st century, and that it's not going to be easy and it's not going to be cheap," adding, "But, literally, people are dying due to errors with paper-based systems."

In the interview Lee also discussed:

  • Consumers' use of online health information;
  • Financial challenges facing Kaiser Permanente;
  • Health savings accounts; and
  • State seismic safety standards for hospitals (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 1/29).
