Orange County Set To Dole Out More Than $1M for Anti-Tobacco Efforts

On Wednesday, the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved an eight-month, $162,750 contract with Phoenix House for smoking cessation services, propelling total county spending for anti-smoking measures to $1.6 million, the Orange County Register's "Healthy Living" reports.

The county funds smoking cessation and other tobacco-control efforts using a portion of the $29.5 million in tobacco settlement funds that it receives annually.

A staff report indicates that the county paid $350,000 to provide smoking-cessation services to 1,254 adults. Twenty-two percent of those adults were not using tobacco 90 days after completing the smoking-cessation program (Muir, "Healthy Living," Orange County Register, 10/29).
