California Doctors Lobby To Increase Support for Primary Care Physicians
Citing a shortage of primary care physicians as fewer medical students choose to pursue primary care medicine, about three dozen California physicians are lobbying Congress to support the Preserving Patient Access to Primary Care Act (HR 2350), KPCC's "KPCC News" reports.Â
The bill would provide scholarships and loan repayment for students who pursue primary care in key shortage areas.
Congress is waiting for the Congressional Budget Office to develop a cost estimate before making a decision on the proposal.
The segment includes comments from:
- Chwen-Yuen Angie Chen, a primary care physician in Santa Cruz;
- Susan Sprau, a physician in Santa Monica; and
- Ning Tang, a recent graduate from Harvard Medical School who is pursuing primary care medicine (Felde, "KPCC News," KPCC, 5/26).
