California Reps. Costa, Cardoza Undecided on National Health Reform
Democratic Reps. Dennis Cardoza (Calif.) and Jim Costa (Calif.) are among a key group of lawmakers who have yet to declare their stance on the current version of national health care reform legislation, the Sacramento Bee reports.
Both lawmakers represent districts in the San Joaquin Valley and are members of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition.
Previous Support
In November, Cardoza and Costa voted with Democrats to pass the House health reform bill (HR 3962). Both representatives cited funding for new medical schools as a reason for their support.
However, the Senate health reform bill (HR 3590) omits such funding.
Neither Cardoza nor Costa has said whether they will support the final legislation. Both representatives say they are waiting until the final language is complete to make a decision.
The two have indicated the cost of the total package is one of their top concerns.
Lobbied on Both Sides
Cardoza and Costa's indecision on health care reform has led Republicans to identify them as part of a group of lawmakers who could decide the fate of a national health care overhaul. As a result, conservative advertisements and phone bank efforts are urging both Democrats to vote against the legislation.
In addition, the Obama administration recently invited both Cardoza and Costa to the White House in an effort to sway their views on the reform efforts.
Down to the Wire
The final version of health care reform legislation is expected to be available Monday.
The bill will need 216 votes to pass the House (Doyle, Sacramento Bee, 3/14).
