Bill Would Require Calif. Physicians To Disclose Board Certifications
California lawmakers are considering a bill (AB 583) that would require physicians, podiatrists and other health workers to inform their patients about which procedures they are licensed to perform and the board that provided their certification, HealthLeaders Media reports.
The Medical Board of California currently maintains a list of each physician's board certification.
However, Linda Whitney -- the board's interim executive director -- said the agency often does not have the capacity to verify whether the information that each physician submits is accurate and up to date.
The proposed bill, by Assembly member Mary Hayashi (D-Castro Valley), would require disclosure of any certification from:
- AÂ member board with the American Board of Medical Specialties; or
- A board associated with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's postgraduate training program (Clark, HealthLeaders Media, 4/19).
