Nurses Reach Tentative Labor Agreement With University of California

Registered nurses who work at University of California medical centers have reached a tentative labor deal with the UC administration, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Nurses Affected by Proposed Deal

The agreement would affect more than 11,000 nurses at student health centers on UC campuses, as well as nurses at UC hospitals in:

  • Davis;
  • Irvine;
  • Los Angeles;
  • San Diego; and
  • San Francisco (Smith, Sacramento Bee, 5/24).

Contract Details

According to the California Nurses Association -- which represents the nurses -- the proposed contract would:

  • Enact pay increases of at least 11% over the next 26 months;
  • Ensure that nurses can take meal and rest breaks during shifts;
  • Establish stronger contract provisions for nurses elected to address patient safety issues; and
  • Limit future increases in employee contributions for health insurance coverage.

Ratification Votes

CNA members are voting on ratifying the contract in meetings that started on Sunday at UCLA Medical Center and will continue through Thursday at other UC campuses (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 5/23).

If ratified, the agreement between CNA and UC would be the nurses' first multi-year contract since 2002 (Robertson, Sacramento Business Journal, 5/23).
