Stanford Linking Up With Medical Groups for Not-for-Profit Alliance

Stanford Hospital & Clinics has linked up with several medical practices for its University HealthCare Alliance, which could pose increased competition for other health systems, the San Francisco Business Times reports.

The alliance is a not-for-profit medical foundation established to manage medical groups.

Affiliation Details

In October 2011, Stanford affiliated with Bay Valley Medical Group, and the organization expects to complete an affiliation with Affinity Medical Group on Feb. 1.

After the Affinity deal is completed, the alliance will have 10 clinical sites in nine cities:

  • Alameda;
  • Castro Valley;
  • Danville;
  • Hayward;
  • Menlo Park;
  • Pinole;
  • Pleasanton;
  • San Jose; and
  • San Pablo.

Bruce Harrison, chief administrative officer of the University HealthCare Alliance, said several affiliations with smaller medical practices could transpire over the coming weeks or months for the University Medical Group, an offshoot of the alliance.

Implications

According to the Business Times, the number of affiliations could signify that Stanford is becoming more aggressive in aligning itself with physician groups in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health could face increased competition from the alliance, the Business Times reports (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 1/20).
