Study IDs Factors Affecting Nursing Home Care Quality

Staff-to-patient ratios and ownership are important factors influencing the quality of care provided at nursing homes, according to a new UC-San Francisco study. The study compared care quality at the 10 largest for-profit nursing home chains from 2003 to 2008, with the care provided at other for-profit, not-for-profit and government-run facilities.

I worked in nursing homes 30 years ago. These issues persist. When virtually all the nursing homes are losing $20 a day in out-of-pocket costs on more than half of their census (Medi-CAL residents, or if any portion is paid by Medi-CAL), there will be quality of care issues. Save, invest, insure for long term care--then stay home w/ help or enjoy a private pay assisted living. None of my over 200 LTCi claimants w/ comprehensive plans have gone to a SNF. With adequate personal financing, there is often no need to go to a SNF.
