Big Business, Little Data

A growing number of Californians are being sent to ambulatory surgery centers for a wide variety of procedures, yet little is known about the care they deliver because reporting is not required.

California Nursing Board Accuses Training School Operators of Fraud

The California Board of Registered Nursing is accusing five nurses of fraud for allegedly operating a school in Orange County and the Philippines that claimed to train students to be registered nurses in California, despite not being approved by the nursing board or accredited, California Watch reports. The board seeks to revoke the nurses' licenses.

School Details

The school -- Nightingale International California -- advertised pre-licensure nursing classes with instruction in Garden Grove and hands-on training in the Philippines.

According to records, the schools were not approved by the nursing board or accredited.

Students who took the courses later found they were ineligible to take the state licensure exam.

According to nursing board spokesperson Russ Heimerich, the school operated from at least 2007 to 2010. Investigators do not know how many students went through the courses.

Bill Would Empower Nursing Board To Stop Unaccredited Schools

Pending legislation (SB 122) -- by Sen. Curren Price (D-Inglewood) -- would give the nursing board the ability to issue a cease-and-desist order to nursing schools that it has not approved.

According to the bill, the nursing board would be required to notify the attorney general's office of any such schools (Jewett, California Watch, 5/18).
