Groups Warn Prop. 29 Would Hurt Small Tobacco Retailers

The San Francisco-based Latin American and Caribbean Business Chamber of Commerce, the California Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce and the California Black Chamber of Commerce oppose Proposition 29, a June ballot initiative that would increase California's tax on cigarettes by $1 per pack to raise funds for cancer research and smoking cessation programs. The groups say the measure would hurt small businesses that sell tobacco products.

Yeah,right--these are the societal dregs that often sell to kids, and always oppose enforcement on sales-to-minors laws.
I suggest that they get a real job--go "straight"--sell goods that are good--and don't destroy the user,their family and friends nearby--

Yes, it would hurt those selling cigarettes today. However, a lifetime of higher cancer risk for the smoker and their friends and family will cost billions to the rest of us; and if the vendors are paying taxes, their taxes will be up, too. I can never forget my LTCi client who would remove her oxygen nose tube to light up a cigarette on the terrace of the $5000/month assisted living her long-term care insurance was paying for. She could not remain home alone in her weakened condition because of the smoking fire risk. Smoking looks cool in the movies--in long-term care, not so much...
