California Health Care Personnel News Update for June 2012

Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians

On June 15, Gov. Jerry Brown (D) announced two appointments to the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.

The appointees are:

  • Todd D'Braunstein (R), who has worked in several positions at Patton State Hospital since 2009; and
  • John Vertido (R), who has served on the board since 2010 and has been a nursing instructor at the Curam College of Nursing since earlier this year.

The positions do not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 6/15).

California Department of Public Health

On June 22, Brown announced the appointment of Monica Wagoner (D) as deputy director of legislative and government affairs for the California Department of Public Health.

Since 2007, Wagoner has served as acting deputy director of legislative and government affairs for the agency.

The position does not require Senate confirmation, and annual compensation is $108,576 (Office of the Governor release, 6/22).

California State Board of Optometry

On June 15, Brown announced two appointments to the California State Board of Optometry. The appointees are:

  • Alex Arredondo (R), who has served on the board since 2007 and has worked in private practice since 1992; and
  • Madhu Chawla, who has been an optometrist at Kaiser Permanente since 2008.

The positions do not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 6/15).

Catalina Island Medical Center, Avalon

John Friel -- former Oak Valley Hospital CEO -- has been hired as CEO of Catalina Island Medical Center in Avalon, the Modesto Bee reports.

Friel will begin the role on July 9. He will replace retiring CEO Bryan Ballard (Modesto Bee, 6/26).

Dental Board of California

On June 15, Brown named Stephen Casagrande (D) to the Dental Board of California by Brown.

Casagrande has been a dentist in private practice since 1974 and has served on the Dental Board since 2006.

The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 6/15).

Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente has named Ronald Copeland as its new Oakland-based chief diversity officer and senior vice president of national diversity strategy and policy, effective Jan. 1, 2013, the San Francisco Business Times reports.

Copeland currently serves as president and executive medical director of Kaiser's Ohio Permanente Medical Group (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 6/11).

Respiratory Care Board of California

On June 8, Gov. Brown announced two appointments to the Respiratory Care Board of California.
The appointees are:

  • Rebecca Franzoia (D), who served as capitol director for Lt. Gov. John Garamendi (D) from 2007 to 2009 and held several positions in the state Department of Insurance from 1991 to 2007; and
  • Mark Goldstein (D), who has been a senior manager for respiratory and clinical services at Sutter Care at Home's Timberlake Division since 2002.

The positions do not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 6/8).

Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women, San Diego

Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women has named Colleen McNally as its chief medical officer, U-T San Diego reports.

McNally has held multiple positions at the hospital, including serving 10 years on the OB/GYN Supervisory Committee (U-T San Diego, 6/4).

Sharp Memorial Hospital, San Diego

Geoff Stiles has been named chief medical officer of Sharp Memorial Hospital, U-T San Diego reports.

Stiles has served in multiple positions at the hospital, including chief of staff (U-T San Diego, 6/4).

Veterans Home of California, Barstow

On June 4, Brown announced the appointment of Raymond Lau as administrator at the Veterans Home of California in Barstow.

Lau recently served as administrator at Century Skilled Nursing Care in Inglewood from 2009 to 2012.

The position does not require Senate confirmation, and annual compensation is $105,960 (Office of the Governor release, 6/4).
