U.S. News Ranks Calif. Hospitals Among Best in the Country
Several hospitals in California made U.S. News & World Report's 2013-2014 list of the top U.S. hospitals, U-T San Diego reports.
List Details
To compile the list, U.S. News evaluated nearly 5,000 hospitals for their performances in 16 medical specialties.
U.S. News examined federal data on:
- Infection rates;
- Nurse-to-patient ratios;
- Patient safety; and
- Patient survival rates.
The rankings also were based on structural factors, such as:
- Patient volume; and
- Operation of specialty departments (Sisson, U-T San Diego, 7/15).
Calif. Hospitals on National Honor Roll
U.S. News assembled an "Honor Roll" that recognizes 18 U.S. hospitals that achieved high scores in six or more specialties.
Three California hospitals made the Honor Roll, including:
- UCLA Medical Center, which ranked 5th overall in the U.S.;
- UC-San Francisco Medical Center, which ranked 7th overall; and
- Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, which ranked 13th overall.
California Hospital Rankings
According to U.S. News, the top 10 hospitals in California in order are:
- UCLA Medical Center, with 15 nationally ranked specialties;
- Stanford Hospital and Clinics in Palo Alto, with 13 nationally ranked specialties;
- UCSF Medical Center, with 13 nationally ranked specialties;
- Cedars-Sinai, with 12 nationally ranked specialties;
- UC-San Diego Medical Center, with 10 nationally ranked specialties;
- Scripps La Jolla Hospitals and Clinics, with 6 nationally ranked specialties;
- John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, with 4 nationally ranked specialties;
- Keck Hospital of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, with 4 nationally ranked specialties;
- UC-Irvine Medical Center in Orange, with 3 nationally ranked specialties; and
- Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, with 2 nationally ranked specialties (Leonard, U.S. News & World Report, 7/16).
