What I have learned when trying to discuss evidence based medicine with season skeptics is that the resistance to change or use of evidence in decision making has very little to do with science. Most of the time what was learned in school, from mentors, early in practice is what sticks. There may never have been strong data to back a way of doing things but “hey it’s worked all these years”.
Consumers take a skeptical view because they don’t understand all the medical mumbo jumbo and it ends up sounding like – we will cut cost by withholding care to you. We should learn to simplify things. Pick a scenario: 1) You have 6 months to live, a healthcare provider has a choice to try to save your life using evidence-based medicines, techniques and products that have been tested, proven, and demonstrates an ability to improve your health and increase your life span. Or 2)A healthcare provider has a choice of using unproven medicines, techniques, etc and wants to have a go with instinct.
