We are gratified to read that "Road to Reform" with the above column has identified the topic of hospital/provider consolidations and/or mergers (and by extension a similar study is needed for payers/insurers) as one of the five Sydney awards. Kudos for the choice.

We have been commenting with blogs on this same topic, noting the 2006 initial study of The Synthesis Project, for almost a year with our: "Do consolidations in the health care industry help the end user - as in the consumer? Let's Discuss!"

A few other seminal articles have also been published since then. And it is welcome news to see that the FTC/DOJ are looking again at the impact of such consolidations and mergers - and perhaps both can broaden their perspective to also include the new and more legally nebulous "collaborative synergies" among hospital/provider systems.
