I enjoyed your article very much about the nuances of designing patient portals. Our company works with clinical diagnostic labs, designing portals to deliver lab results to providers, but, also providing functionality for the provider to push to the patient. We've found we are constantly having to educate the labs about MU and forthcoming legislation/regulations and enouraging them to be ahead of the curve, by offering the opportunity for their healthcare provider customers the ability to send results onto their patients. We offer an html browser based view of results, but, the ability to print as a .pdf. Additionally, we offer the ability for a provider to add notes to the report, as well, should they desire and then share with their patient.
I've been in the industry for 18 years or so, not as a "software solution", but, on the other side and we are ohh so slow to adopt change, compared to other industries.
Thank you again for an insightful article.

PERSONAL HEALTH SYSTEMS, BEYOND MERE PORTALS
We long overdue in providing a wide range of tools and information to the people we serve. It is a full personal health support system.
Going back to when I was Veterans Health Administration CIO, we argued for and developed the personal health system (My HealtheVet for VA; My HealthePeople for anyone), a full set of electronic tools and info to help a person and a person's health providers partner to improve health. This full suite included person's self-entered information, full electronic health record, sensors and other tools to monitor and report on health in home/community, electronic messaging between the person, a caregiver and a person's full health care team, and ability to exchange information with any care provider (e.g. ER), anywhere and anytime.
Personal health systems help achieve person-centered health and a healthy future for people.
