In a conversation with California Healthline, Lyle Hurst -- network developer for the Encore Fellowships Network -- discussed how Civic Ventures started the Encore Fellows program with support from the David and Lucille Packard Foundation and Hewlett-Packard.
According to Hurst, Encore Fellows generally have spent the majority of their career in the private sector. The network matches the fellows with a not-for-profit organization, government agency or private firm with a social purpose.
The fellows work part-time with the social-purpose group for about a year, during which they complete a high-impact assignment, establish contacts and learn about the organization's key issues.
Hurst noted that there are between 15 and 20 Encore Fellows working with California community clinics on issues such as capacity building and safety-net care (California Healthline, 11/30).
